Imperial (CFM, in, FPM)Algorithmic Methodology & Mathematical Rigor
1. Equal Friction Method (ACCA Manual D)
The Equal Friction method sizes duct runs to maintain an identical friction loss per linear unit of ductwork throughout the trunk and branches. Sizing adheres to the classical fluid dynamics friction loss model:
Where h_f is friction rate (in. wg per 100 ft), CFM is volumetric airflow, and D is duct circular internal diameter in inches.
2. Huebscher Circular Equivalence
To translate equivalent airflow and friction between round pipe and rectangular ductwork, this engine implements Huebscher's empirical equation (adopted in ASHRAE Fundamentals and SMACNA manuals):
Where a and b represent rectangular internal height and width, and D_e is circular equivalent diameter.
3. Velocity & Acoustic Safety
Air velocity governs acoustic noise transmission, grille throw distance, and static pressure drop. The velocity continuity equation is evaluated on every calculate cycle:
Maintains aspect ratio under 4:1 to prevent excessive internal turbulence and sheet-metal drumming.
Recommended Maximum Air Velocities (ASHRAE / ACCA Standards)
Reference guidelines for target air velocities across residential and low-velocity commercial installations:
| Ductwork Element | Residential (Quiet) | Residential (Max) | Commercial (Standard) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main Supply Trunk | 700 – 900 FPM | 1,000 FPM | 1,200 – 1,500 FPM |
| Supply Branch Runouts | 600 – 700 FPM | 800 FPM | 800 – 1,000 FPM |
| Main Return Trunk | 600 – 800 FPM | 900 FPM | 1,000 – 1,300 FPM |
| Return Grille Inlets | 300 – 450 FPM | 500 FPM | 400 – 600 FPM |
